Whistle from Engine - Vauxhall Insignia 1. I've got a "whistling" noise coming from the front of the car when I accelerate. I say whistling but it's quite hard to describe, that's probably the best description I can come up with. It's not like a shrill whistle, it starts softly and it whirs up to a very noticeable whistle if I continue accelerating without changing gear.

It feels like the sound has an "electrical motor" element to the noise like when fans or hard drives whir up to speed when you switch on a computer but maybe I'm imagining that because I spend so much time around computers.Original Poster. Search My Stuff What's New 3 12 24 Vauxhall Insignia 1. Hi guys, just wondering if anyone could help me. I drive a Vauxhall Insignia 1. It stops as soon as I touch the brake but then when I come off the brake the sound begins again.

It sound s like a metal bell being rung constantly if that makes any sense. I have tried recording the noise but as soon as I try it stops!

If anyone has any idea about what this could be I would greatly appreciate any suggestions because it is really getting quite annoying now!

Intermittent heavy knocks from the engine could be crank end float from a failed thrust washer allowing the crank to hit the block. The ringing nature of the sound could also correspond to piston slap, which also fits the throttle sensitivity you describe, but that tends to repeat which I don't think is happening if I understood you correctly.

E-bmw 5, posts months. When you say it stops when you touch the brake, do you mean even if you keep your right foot on the accelerator or do you mean if you come off the accelerator it is still making the noise until you brake? Yeah sorry, to be more clear, if I come off the accelerator and let the car coast I can still hear the noise but if I come off the accelerator and then on to the brake pedal the noise stops until I release the brake pedal. Even the slightest bit of pressure on the brake pedal silence the noise immediately until I release the brake.

Quick links. Metal rattle sound under medium acceleration All Vauxhall Astra K related discussions. Anyone suffering with the same issue? We headed straight back to the dealer and one of the technicians took it for a spin. Apparently the way the tech drove it was a lot more noticeable. The chap took it straight into a bay, and spent about half an hour looking things over from the top and also underneath. He said he couldn't find anything in particular but had loosened off and tightened a number of plate and panels, including those that protect the underside of the engine.

The noise hasn't reappeared. Power Red 1. Nonetheless, I had a Merc right up my backside on the N Circular the other day, which was annoying me, so I floored it and left him like a dot in my rear view mirror! Anyway, I was surprised at how smooth and 'noiseless' the acceleration was - certainly nothing like you're describing. Then again, I had a n Astra 'J' diesel previously and an Impreza before that, so I'm guessing anything would seem quiet after those!!

It is more of a whining grumble as oppose to a high pitched squeel and the best i can describe it is what a car sounds like when reversed at high speeds. The noise is soley dependant on engine revs so gets louder as revs increase, and gets quieter as they decrease. When im driving and i press clutch the noise will drop as fast as the revs drop but will then appear when i depress the clutch to engage the gear.

It happens in all gears, as well as neutral when in park. It happens in all ranges of the revs however engine noise drowns it out at about rpm. Strangely enough the noise is most quiet when car is cold, but after minutes it is very noticeable. Many thanks. Do you know if the mechanic disconnected the drivebelt and found that the noise went away? If he did that would narrow it down to items turned by the belt e. See if the noise gets worse when turning and accelerating vs just turning as it might be the power steering.

That's also run by the belt so would've gone quiet when the belt was disconnected. Hi Mate, thanks for your response. However, mechanic number 2 says that the noise is still slightly there when the drivebelt is disconnected, it is just much less as the engine doesnt have such a load placed on it.

I agree with him as i listened with it off and it was still there but very subtle. There seems to be no problems with my power steering as it works perfectly fine with no temporary jerking, and the turning of the wheel even to full lock doesnt alter the whining sound.Log in or Sign up.

The car in question is a Vauxhall Astra, 1. When accelerating the car feels hesitant, it will accelerate as normal and then have a second or two where it hesitates before continuing as normal, mainly between rpm. Also, when in gear, especially 3rd around 30mph, if I take my foot of the throttle, it will judder, almost like it's kangarooing.

Now, I know at the last service there was a small leak in the flexi pipe of the exhaust which the garage said will get progressively worse, could this be affecting things? It was around 6 months ago so I imagine the cold weather and salty roads may have made things worse. Any ideas if it could be related or what it could be?

Diagnosing Whining Noise When Accelerating

Mar 9, at AM 2. Judders when in 3rd gear. Acceleration seems ok, but juddering if going around 30mph in 3rd gear. Mar 9, at AM 3. Mines similar, seems a little hesitant when trying to accelerate the last week too, not sure if its just me being paranoid or not realising the revs are a bit low for the gear.

I'd be interested to see what the problem could be. Mar 9, at AM 4. Any codes stored? You can do a pedal test or I can see mine through the OBC holding the settings button for 10 seconds or something They used to like going through the coil packs on the mk5. Mar 9, at AM 5.Perhaps the rear wheels need balancing.

If they were out of balance you'd feel a vibration through the car, whereas front wheel out of balance is felt more through the steering wheel. Could be a buckled wheel. I had a damaged front left and vibration was crazy from but stopped after that. I chucked mine away after I bought the car and got a spacesaver and jack, I never recommend anyone keep that stuff, its terrible and some garages will not clean them up to replace a tyre.

Fairly common problem, ply seperation causes a bulge somewhere on the tyre and can even effect a well balanced trye as the shape changes with increasing speed. From which small car to buy at which price point to the best UK-built cars, our Top 10s have the lot.
